Different web designers and developers have different choices for mandatory WordPress plugins they use when developing WordPress websites. This decision to use certain WordPress plugins mainly depends on the suitability of the plugin to meet the functionality as well as based on the developer’s experience.
I have been working with WordPress for close to five years now. I have developed all sorts of websites from e-commerce that sell hundreds of products to digital magazines to publish news and stories to corporate websites for professional portfolios and testimonials. The first thing that comes to mind when a client talks about a WordPress website is the mandatory plugins that will be installed to ensure that all functionalities are achieved.
I noted that there are some WordPress plugins I have used in every website I created irrespective of the website’s purpose. In this article, I will share the mandatory WordPress plugins that every web developer needs to install on their website irrespective of the type of website and its functionality.
This is one of the most popular plugins for analytical purposes. Despite the purpose of the website, it is important to know the number of views your website is having. For example, corporate portfolios need to know the number of views to determine how they can increase traffic and increase their conversion from views to leads. E-commerce websites on the other hand need to know the number of views to determine how to increase sales from their websites. News magazines and blogs are no exception since they rely on page views to generate revenue through Google AdSense or affiliate marketing.
Since every website owner needs analytics reports, it is mandatory to install Monster Insight. It is very easy to use and maneuver. The basic analytics element is free but they also have advanced features such as publisher and search console which are subscription-based.
The thing I love most about Monster Insights is that their analytics are first on the WordPress administrator dashboard. Immediately after logging into your WordPress account, your website analytics are displayed where you can track sessions (A session is the browsing session of a single user to your site), pageviews (A pageview is defined as a view of a page on your site that is being tracked by the Analytics tracking code. Each refresh of a page is also a new pageview), average session duration (Total duration of all sessions (in seconds) / number of sessions), and bounce rate (Percentage of single-page visits (or web sessions). It is the number of visits in which a person leaves your website from the landing page without browsing any further). These analytics help you understand the quality of traffic your website is attracting.
Google Site kit
The google site kit allows you to have your site’s traffic overview at a single glance. From a single interface, you are able to track your google analytics reports, google search console reports, and google AdSense results. It also provides page speed insights that show you how long it takes for your website to load. This is an important factor mainly because it contributes to user experience while navigating through your website.
Google search console
From the search funnel, the plugin shows you the visibility of your website on the search engine and how many visitors find your website from searches. This information is relayed in terms of impressions (how many times your website is seen) and the number of clicks from the impressions.
This is a powerful analytical tool similar to the monster insights analytics element. Unlike monster insights which require a subscription to unlock all the features, this analytics tool is free. The plugin shows all users, the channels that lead them to your website (direct, search, or through social media). It also shows the geographical locations of these users, and the types of devices they use (mobile, tablet, desktop).
This is the monetization aspect where a website owner generates revenue by allowing advertisements on the website through google ads. On the interface, the website owner can track earnings in terms of RPM (revenue per thousand impressions), impressions, and page CTR (click-through rate). However, this is only visible to users with verified google AdSense accounts. I will post an article on how to get verified for AdSense. WPBakery Page Builder
Creating pages can be challenging especially for a person without a coding background. WPBakery Page Builder allows you to build and publish pages with ease. There are two main ways of building pages using this WordPress plugin.
The first one is using templates. The plugin has several templates that allow the web designer or developer to create pages. For instance, through a service page template, the developer can create a services page by choosing an existing page and adding their details.
The second way is adding elements on the webpage by simply dragging them from the WPBakery Page Builder to the webpage. It allows you to add elements such as rows, images, text boxes, videos, and paragraphs to the page. Through whichever way, you choose to build your page it is easy and straightforward. Search engine optimization is very important. We have more than once mentioned impressions that describe the visibility of your website or your web content. Search engine optimization is the aspect of making sure that your content is visible by the search engine. It ensures your website ranks higher and increases its visibility on the search engine.
This is where the Yoast SEO plugin comes in. it helps you optimize keywords for your users. It allows you to select a keyword or a key phrase and track its density in your content so that it stands out, is high-quality, and ranks higher on the search engine. I recommend this WordPress plugin because it is very effective. It is also very easy to use.
A user only comes up and inserts a keyword or key phrase on the Yoast SEO panel which is at the bottom of the page. The user can then optimize the web pages in terms of internal links, external links, featured images, keyword density, keyword placement in the title and subheadings, text length, and Meta description. All these
Most people surf the web using mobile devices. GSMA intelligence data affirms that 66.92% of the global internet users are on mobile devices. This means that every website owner or developer must ensure that the website is optimized for mobile view and use.
AMP plugin optimizes the website for web view. It improves user experience while interacting with your website by ensuring web pages load faster and content is effectively rendered on mobile browsers. It is not only effective for news websites but also for other types of websites. AMP is easy to install and most often doesn’t require complex configurations. Installing and activating the plugins is all that’s required to get it up and running.
Click to Tweet
Twitter is one of the most effective platforms to drive traffic to your website. I like this plugin because it allows you to drive more traffic to your website by allowing users to easily tweet your content. It allows you to add the ‘click to tweet’ feature at any part of your website. You can tweet the most important details from your website with one click. Below is an example of how this plugin works.'Click to Tweet' allows users to tweet content from a website which drives more traffic to the website from Twitter. Click To Tweet
Post views counter
This plugin helps you track the number of pages or post views your website is getting. It is especially important when one is running a blog website. Depending on the WordPress theme one is using, page and post views are not displayed on the page or post. This plugin helps you achieve this capability by tracking each view, counting it, and displaying it at the bottom of the post. It also helps you track the number of views on the posts section.
Summary of WordPress Plugins
Each web designer or developer has their preferred plugin. WordPress Plugins help one achieve various functionalities without writing code. The highlighted WordPress plugins are mandatory that every WordPress website must-have. Some may have redundant functionalities. For example, Monster Insights and Google Site Kit but I don’t mind using them both especially since they complete each other.
