Social media marketing is fundamental for all brands in the current age where digital marketing is mandatory. Brands are rushing out to create accounts on various social media platforms. Twitter is my favorite social media platform mainly because it’s opinionative and therefore provides some of the most valuable feedback and insight. But building an audience on Twitter that supports your brand is often easier said than done. Before I can share my Twitter marketing tips, allow me to share my story and how I got to be a digital marketer.

My Story.

My friends and I started a company while still on campus pursuing a degree in computer technology. We all shared a passion for code and thought we could build something to earn us a few bucks. We soon became innovators and conceived several innovations. Each of us got a monthly paycheck while still on campus till we graduated and things began to change. While on campus, we got clients from referrals and that was enough.

However, after campus, there was a need to increase our income. We had to step up from relying on referrals and start getting more clients to meet our budgetary demands. That’s when I came across the term digital marketing and decided to be our start-up’s digital marketer. Having been a passionate coder, it was hard spending most of my time on social media creating content and engaging. I, therefore, took it upon myself to learn about digital marketing and practice it to drive more traffic to our website and get more clients.

After almost a year of learning and practicing, I started becoming very good at it. I learned so much from my experience as a digital marketer and now that I have a chance and a platform, I deem it worthwhile to share what I learned to help other digital marketers out there. As I mentioned earlier, Twitter is one of my favorite social media platforms. I have learned the following tips to grow your Twitter audience:

Content Strategy

Content marketing is one of the most important aspects of digital marketing. To be successful on Twitter one needs to have a content strategy in place. A content strategy determines what you post and when you post it. These are two important aspects of digital marketing. But why really do you need a content strategy?

Content strategy helps you attract, capture, and retain a following on Twitter. People follow and engage users who release relevant content that they can resonate with. The key to building a Twitter following is by having a content strategy that determines the type of content you post and how often you post. On this note, you should seek to share content that is relevant and resonates with your brand.

For instance, when I manage a youth organization’s Twitter account, I focus on tweeting information that the youth can resonate with. I might choose to create content about how the youth can use talent, how they can be financially empowered, or how they can create high-quality relationships and networks around them. The key is to be genuine and share content that people can relate to. This will allow them to open up and share their experiences which will help u grow your brand.

Twitter Chats

Initially, I did not know what Twitter chats were. My focus was on digital marketing, financial freedom, and mental health. I believe that these are the most important aspects of anyone’s life. Initially, I just shared content about this on my personal page. I did not get any reaction because I barely had any following yet I had content. So, I learned that one needs to be part of a community to grow on Twitter.

I joined several Twitter chats where people shared similar interests as me. On matter digital marketing, I joined the following chats I Speak Africa Chat, Africa Tweet Chat, SEO Talk, and Twitter Smarter just to mention a few. On matters of mental health, I joined mental health. These Twitter chats did not just give me an audience to share my views but also helped me learn more about these topics. They also helped me amass an active following that regularly engaged with my content and increased my reach on social media.

Soon, I was engaging with legendary tweeps with whom I resonated. My brand grew gradually without incidence. My following increased day in day out and all my followers were active which was translated to the engagement I got and consequently conversions on my website. I was not just driving traffic to my direct messages but also to our start-up which was growing gradually.


After creating a content strategy and joining in on Twitter chats, the most important thing is being consistent. As they say, consistently is key! I’m a big fan of consistency because it’s realistic in so many ways. For instance, it helps me justify the fact that doing big things occasionally isn’t important. Instead, it is better to do small things each day since they always result in great results in the long run. This is my opinion but it never fails me. That is what consistency does. It helps one portray their brand as trustworthy and reliable. People learn to trust you when you show them that you will always show up to do what is needed.

My approach to digital marketing and social media marketing might be a bit different. I don’t just focus on the literature part where I appeal to people’s emotions, logic, and ethics but I also focus on the numbers. Being consistent ensures that the conversion rate is either stable or gradually increasing. People have different goals when opening their Twitter accounts but my goals align with the brand I’m advocating for.

Being consistent on my personal account helps me show my prospective employers that I can manage their Twitter accounts and I have analytics to back me up. Consistency on a commercial brand ensures that the company has high conversion rates and consequently increased sales with analytics to back that up. So on and so forth. Consistency remains one of the most important aspects when marketing and managing a brand’s social media account.

Twitter Growth Tips

The tips above are the most important. However, there are other tips that I might want to briefly highlight before ending this nice piece.

Research has proven that posts with visuals such as images, GIFs, and videos among others have the most impressions. People are curious and are inclined to interact with content that has visuals. It is therefore very important to share posts with visuals. Check these two tweets from the punch on the press account Twitter account to prove this theory.

When I mentioned consistency, I never mentioned the number of times you should tweet. In this sector, I believe that one should tweet sensibly. I would recommend between 5-10 tweets spread across each day. This should not be a problem especially when one has a content marketing strategy. Sharing too many tweets may be considered spam and highlighted by twitter algorithms. I would recommend 6 tweets each day provided you mix them up (text, image, video, GIF).

You should engage other tweeps. Follow people whose content you can resonate with and share your opinions respective. Always being respectful is not just important when growing a brand but in general, I think it makes us being good humans. Respectfully share your opinions of people share.
